Grill care guide
How to clean grill grates
Grates take the most abuse on any grill. A quick routine after each cook keeps them easy, and a deeper clean every few months keeps them from rusting out.
After every cook
Leave the burners on high for 10 minutes with the lid closed, then brush while the grates are still hot. Carbon comes off far easier hot than cold.
Deep cleaning by grate type
Stainless steel
Soak them in hot water with a degreaser for 30 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch pad. Rinse and dry fully before they go back in.
Cast iron
Skip the long soak. Scrub, rinse fast, dry on the grill over low heat, then wipe on a thin coat of high-heat oil.
Mistakes that ruin grates
Don't run cast iron through the dishwasher, and don't leave stainless soaking overnight in bleach. Both lead to rust.
